Gear Curiosity
Videos that answer gear questions, or maybe they ask more questions than they answer?
The Fun Stuff
We all have questions.... like....
"Why would I use a tubescreamer instead of a Blues Driver?"
"Why do my solos disappear when I kick in my so called "boost" pedal?"
"Why is my tone awesome at home but then it sounds like mud in the band?"
Check out these videos for some answers...
Which Fuzz does it better?
I was curious about which fuzz would be give better Hendrix tones. Originally I set out to see which was better, but I think what happened was proof that these two fuzzes can sound very similar. The Kingtone seemed to have more headroom / ability to clean up as compared to the Fuzzface, but they both sounded great in my opinion.
Guitar Comparison - 6 different guitars, from Strat to Les Paul
With an abundance of gear available, it's so hard to figure out what you need, and what you want. I wanted to look at a few different guitar types back to back for a baseline comparison. These have all been run through my '68 Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue at a few different settings (clean, edge of breakup, and all out). Signal chain - guitar, cable, amp, SM57. No additional processing was done whatsoever. Hopefully, this video gives you an idea of a starting point for some of these guitars, and of course you can always add pedals.
A Tiny, Travel, Gig-Worthy, Battery Powered Pedal Board
I need a flexible/universal pedal board for an upcoming travel gig. I know I get to play with an SG and a Strat, and I also know I get to play through a super reverb. I know volume will be an issue, so getting god gain sounds out of the board will be key. Also, building in some modulation and delay options will be needed as well. The set list includes pop, rock, classic rock, and even some reggae. I ended up building what I think is a really cool small travel board, that is even battery powered! No need to worry about the power situation. Keep an eye out for a part 2 - after I have played the gig.
DIY Pedalboarding - Part 1
This is Part One of a Three part series that catalogues my pedalboard build for a client. Pedalboards are just one element of your sound, and knowing how to put one together that will survive transport, set-up, and break-down could be the difference between a great gig and NO GIG AT ALL. Trust me, we've all been there.
DIY Pedalboarding - Part 2
his is Part Two of a Three part series that catalogues my pedalboard build for a client. Pedalboards are just one element of your sound, and knowing how to put one together that will survive transport, set-up, and break-down could be the difference between a great gig and NO GIG AT ALL. Trust me, we've all been there. In Part Two we will be going from the design phase into the start of the building phase. Specifically this will focus on building the base "board". Other kits and boards are available, but I really like these DIY kits that I have been using. Give this series a watch and I bet you will take something away from it.
DIY Pedalboarding - Part 3
This is Part Three of a Three part series that catalogues my pedalboard build for a client. Pedalboards are just one element of your sound, and knowing how to put one together that will survive transport, set-up, and break-down could be the difference between a great gig and NO GIG AT ALL. Trust me, we've all been there. At this point in our build we have planned out our board, and we have built the platform to orient our pedals on (including installation of the power supply). Part 3 shows the pedal installation, and the power/audio cable installation on the board, and several helpful tips along the way. Give this series a watch and I bet you will take something away from it.
The Rig for The Gig - Guitar Gear & How to Choose - Amp, Pedal, Both
There are so many options available when putting your live rig together. I think we have to really determine what sort of setup we should have on stage given our specific scenario. A few big points in this video: 1 - Technology has come. along way in creating a convincing guitar amp simulation.... and 2 - You should consider many factors putting your rig together, like... do you want to carry gear? do you need to hear vocals? Are you wearing in-ears? Where in the overall mix do you fit? and some others....
Guitar Pedal DIY - Install LED Light in your Amp Pedal ON YOUR OWN
We've all pressed a pedal not realizing if it is really on or not... and wouldn't it be great if there was an indicator for some of those amp foot switches. This video will show you how to add a simple LED (ON/OFF) circuit to an amp footswitch, so we really know if it's on or not. Also check out the SHORT version of this video if you want a 60-second overview.
