Music Theory & Guitar Lessons

Videos capturing the essential knowledge to get you rocking on stage as fast as possible!

Why?

A few things....  is music theory absolutely necessary to play guitar?   NO, it isn't.  In fact many of my heroes (and likely your heroes) will admit that they don't have any formal musical education.

Personally I learned the guitar at first by playing fret by fret and using tabs and numbers.   After a few years, I started to look into music theory, and then BANG it all started to connect.

With basic knowledge, you can greatly accelerate your ability to improvise, as well as learn songs you want to play faster.  It also makes playing by ear that much easier.

The First Theory Lesson

The world of guitar is overwhelming.... The world of music theory is overwhelming. The truth is...there are easier connections to make between music theory and the guitar that provide us with the background and confidence we need to kill it on stage. This quick music theory/guitar lesson will show you some very basic concepts as well as some helpful tips to get you using more of the fretboard quickly.

The Major Scale

Let's start with the Major Scale. Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Whole, Half.....The Guitar is pattern based and learning how to construct some of the basic scales and patterns on the guitar I'm multiple locations will get you jamming on stage faster than you'll believe.

The Minor Scale

We continue with the minor scale... and here's where it starts to get epic. The minor scale interval scale pattern is: Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole.....The Guitar is pattern based and learning how to construct some of the basic scales and patterns on the guitar I'm multiple locations will get you jamming on stage faster than you think.

Chord Construction 101

n my opinion, there has to be a reason to put the effort in to commit something to memory. This short music theory lesson on constructing basic chords (major and minor triads as shown in this video) details the process of finding and putting together major and minor chords in various places on the fretboard..... but WHY! Well, if you want to add interest, play with other people, or be heard in a cluttered mix, then finding other voicings is essential, and worth learning...

Triads - Chord around the Board

I wish I learned this sooner. One of the best and fastest ways to get fluent around the fretboard, learn songs quickly, and start improvising your own lines, is to learn where major and minor chords can be found around the fretboard. Learning triads and how to find them quickly in a few places around the neck is one of the quickest ways to get there. In this video we cover basic triad construction, the difference between major & minor triads, and how to find the same chord in multiple places on the neck. This will get you jamming in no time!

Triads, Inversions, & More - Start to Sound Like YOU!

This is NOT just another triad lesson. To me, THE most important thing when playing in a band setting, is finding your place in the mix. Once I was able to find different voicings and different starting points for chords sounds, it was really easy fit in a jam with a band, regardless of instrumentation (keys, horns, vocals, etc)

How to Easily Use More Fretboard

We all want to be fluent on the fretboard, and getting around it easier is NOT hard. Let's take a few shapes we know independently and understand how they relate to one another..... BOOM! A larger scale shape that gets you using more of the fretboard.

Learn Songs Fast on Guitar- Which Chords Go Together (Diatonic Harmony?)

If you are looking for a quick way to have a general idea of which chords are likely to appear in a song.... OR... you are looking for an easy way to start communicating or writing music... Diatonic Harmony is a great concept to invest some time in. To spend some time learning it... it has to be practical. Well, it's very simple, and very relevant... Learning the Major, Minor, Minor, Major, Major, Minor, Diminished, Major (tonic) formula for major key chord progressions will have you learning songs faster than ever. Not to mention next step... Nashville Number System.... but stay tuned on that.
